MAGRUNNER 220S PLANER LURE OPERATING MANUAL

Carefully read the below operating instructions.

Please note that this manual does not apply to the smaller MagRunner 180. The 180 was not designed with Planer Lure technology.

What is a Planer Lure?

Physically a Planer Lure is a lure that has a lip that’s as big as a small Planer. In this case the lip is 13 cm or 5.12 in.

Performance wise a Planer Lure practically runs at unlimited depths at unlimited speeds, and has no so called ”blow out” speed.

A Planer Lure keeps diving until you stop giving it line or stop the boat. The faster you run it the deeper it dives.

If you want to troll the MagRunner 220S Planer Lure at lower speeds like 1-5 knots, and still reach deep down, you can pull it from the 2nd tow.

The largest Polycarbonate lure ever made

The MagRunner 220S Planer Lure is the by far largest lure ever made out of Polycarbonate or PC. The MagRunner 220S Planer Lure is 3 times bigger than the previous biggest Polycarbonate made lure.

Why do we use Polycarbonate?

To make the Planer Lip of the MagRunner 220S retain its geometry at all speeds and keep it from being deformed by the immense drag when pulled thru water, the Planer Lip must be made from a very stiff and rigid material, with very light weight. The only material suitable for making a Planer Lip is Polycarbonate or PC for short.

Polycarbonate

Polycarbonate is one of the strongest materials ever invented by mankind. Mankind use Polycarbonate in space travels, using it to make the viziers for the astronaut helmets, other applications are combat jet canopies, HUD’s, aircraft windows, optical lenses, helmet viziers, riot shields and bulletproof glass.

In comparison, the most commonly used material for making lures is ABS, but ABS is way too soft for making a Planer Lip, as it allows the lip to bend and deform when pulled thru water. ABS is also used for making toys.

Polycarbonate is an extremely tough material to work with, it's very hard and has a high melting point, making it a challenge to injection mold, and ultrasonically weld. The lure can be dry at a depth of 20 feet but take in water at 30 feet. This happens when water pressure increases, forcing water inside the lure thru microscopic channels.

Waterproof construction

To make the MagRunner 220S Planer Lure forever waterproof at all depths, and run best when pulled from the 1st tow, which offers 30% less drag than the 2nd tow, we invented the solid core lure concept.

The MagRunner 220S Planer Lure has a solid core made of injection molded EPP (Expandable Polypropylene). EPP is a closed cell plastic that does not absorb water. The air is trapped inside the solid core which consists of 95% air.

We also added an injection molded piece made of TPR, to fill the cavity under the lip.

The result, we run the lure at 15 knots with 130 feet of 135 lbs mono line under the water (total length of the line was 145 feet), with the line cutting thru the first wake just 15 feet behind the boat. We call it “line surfing”.

If we had an enough strong drag and line, there's no telling how deep and fast the Magrunner 220S can run.

Actually, our first prototype, hit bottom at 35 meters or 115 feet, at 10 knots.

Internal colors

To reduce drag and weight, and make the colors forever protected behind a minimum 3mm thick PC, we put the colors inside the lure. The colors are printed with water waterproof ink on waterproof front adhesive stickers.

Note: Before we introduced the solid core, and even when full of water, the lure ran with "unlimited" depth and speed, but only when pulled from the 2nd tow, and thus producing much higher drag. This "behaviour" was because the lure had a different balance when full of water.

SALTA's objective

Our main objective is to offer the extremely deep diving MAGRUNNER 220S PLANER LURE to technically driven and skilled fishermen, that need a lure that can reach and catch fish that’s really deep down, making the fish season for certain big game fish species span all year round.

The MagRunner 220S Planer Lure  "separate the wheat from the chaff".

With the MagRunner 220S Planer Lure, SALTA offers a lure that runs at depths no other lure has run before.

Fishermen let’s begin!

NOTE

Please note that the below scenario is with 145 feet of 135 pound mono and 200 pound wire leader.

TUNING THE TOW IS KEY

Fine tuning or ”tweaking” the tow/tows is key to exploiting the full potential of this Planer Lure. In fact, the tow you pull it from, needs to be perfectly tuned to make the lure run as a Planer Lure, offering unlimited diving and speed performance.

A perfectly tuned MagRunner 220S Planer Lure will surprise you, scare you and impress you. Pretty much in that order.

The 1st tow is the foremost tow. The 2nd tow is the one behind the 1st tow ;D

PLEASE READ THE BELOW SECTIONS CAREFULLY BEFORE PROCEEDING ANY FURTHER

  • Use a minimum 130 pound gear to run the MagRunner 220S (the smaller 180 model you can run from 30 pound gear and line, up to 130 pound gear and line.
  • So called ”tweaking” or tuning of the tow/tows is key to the successful and maximum utilization of the lures capabilities and performance.
  • Lures run 9-10 knots right out of the box when pulled from the 1st and foremost tow, but tweaking/tuning makes the Magrunner 220S Planer Lure dive and run with ”unlimited” depth and speed (explained further below).

IMPORTANT

You would be better off buying another lure if you don't like

  • fine tuning lures so they run as designed
  • trolling with 130 pound gear
  • trolling a lure that produce 30-32 pound drag at 11 knots
  • lures that run at depths no other lure has run before
  • pulling planers, or don't know how to handle those
  • challenges and breaking boundaries
  • if you don't like to run lures at extreme depths
  • and if you are afraid of drag, we advise you to buy another lure, without Planer Lure technology.

PLANER MODE

What is planer mode?

It’s when your MagRunner 220S Planer Lure plans thru the water, and just like a planer it runs straight.

How do you know your MagRunner 220S Planer Lure achieved planer mode?

  • The lure continues diving as you run faster
  • The line starts chasing the stern of your boat, and keep closing in as you run faster
  • After 7 knots, the lure starts running with a tighter swimming motion
  • Between 7 and 8 knots, the lure gradually transitions into a straight runner
  • From 8 knots lure becomes a planer lure and a straight runner, with a tight vibrating body
  • After 8 knots and beyond, the lure keeps taking line and keep diving deeper when you give it more line
  • From 9-10 knots, the line is about 15-20 feet behind the stern and cuts thru the first wake
  • Drag produced by the lure at 11 knots is 30-32 pounds
  • Lure keeps running and diving no matter how much faster you go or how much line you give it
  • At 14-15 knots the drag produced by the lure is very high
  • Lure eventually breaks your gear and/or line, and/or you

OPTIMAL TROLLING SPEEDS PER TOW

1st tow: 1-20+ knots, max speed is currently unknown, no blow out speed recorded yet

2nd tow: 1-5 knots, blow out speed is approx. 8-11 knots

RIGGING

See further down below.

MINI DAISY CHAINS

The Magrunner 220S Planer Lure runs effortless with our mini Daisy chain, made up of 3-5 mini hard plastic fish from Pesca Sol Y Mar, Spain, or with 3-5 rubber squids.

HOW TO DEPLOY YOUR LURE

You need to handle and operate the MagRunner 220S Planer Lure in the same way you operate a planer. Meaning your boat must be out of gear or idle, or drifting at max 1-2 knots when you deploy the lure.

Why? It’s because a Planer lure produce a lot of drag.

Drag produced by a perfectly tuned lure is about 30-32 pounds at 11 knots when pulled from the 1st tow.

Because of the planer sized lip you need to deploy the lure at very low speeds, if not, the drag will either damage your line and/or your gear, and/or you either physically and/or mentally.

What can happen if you deploy the lure at higher speeds than 1-2 knots?

  • The strong drag may ruin the tuning of the tow
  • Your line breaks
  • Your gear breaks

HOW TO FINE TUNE THE 1st TOW

  • Attach your leader to the 1st tow (foremost)
  • Deploy lure while drifting or max 1-2 knots
  • If the lure blows out at 9-10 knots when pulled from the 1st tow, the tow point needs some fine tuning
  • Note from which side behind the boat in the running direction, the lure surfaced.
  • You will need to move the tow towards the same side your lure surfaced.
  • If the lure surfaced to the right, you gently move the tow to the right side.
  • Hold the lure’s lip firmly in one hand, pressing the lip together, and
  • With the other hand, you take a pair of flat pliers and grab hold of both ”legs” of the tow from above
  • Hold the lip firmly and press it together with one hand and gently move tow with small movements or increments to the left or right side. You only need to move it a tiny bit.
  • You can move tow by either bending/angling it, by bending both ”legs” to the correct side, or move the first leg or wire to the correct side.
  • IMPORTANT! Always press the lip firmly together while performing fine tuning.
  • ATTENTION! If you don’t firmly press the lip together while tuning the tow, you risk cracking open the lure.
  • Watch below video on how, why and when to tune your MagRunner 220S Planer Lure

RETREIVING THE MAGRUNNER 220S PLANER LURE

To retrieve a running lure, you need to stop the boat, or if you know you have stamina, you can try reel it in with boat running at max 2 knots. Faster than that and you will break.

    TUNING

Watch this video on how, why and when to tune your MagRunner 220S Planer Lure

    RIGGING

We attach our leaders, 200 or 400 pound wire leaders, via a 500 pound snap lock attached to the tow.

We do this beacuse it makes it easier and faster for us to change lures during tests involving several lures

Good Luck with your new MagRunner 220S Planer Lure and Tight Lines!
